Role and Responsibilities
The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is the strategic architect of Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's (FAMSF) marketing, communications, and public relations efforts. As a senior leadership figure, the CMO leads a team of over 50 front-line innovators, creatively connecting the museum with diverse audiences.
Strategic Leadership
The CMO drives the success of an ambitious and integrated marketing plan, aligning brand and audience goals with specific objectives for exhibitions, educational programs, and events. They collaborate closely with philanthropy and membership teams to optimize fundraising and messaging.
Earned Revenue Maximization and Audience Engagement
Driving earned revenue is a crucial aspect of the CMO's role. Through targeted marketing campaigns, email strategies, and audience research, they work to increase ticketed admissions and attendance.
Institutional Branding, Public Relations, and Communications
The CMO is the guardian of FAMSF's brand identity, ensuring consistent messaging and a strong public image. They oversee the development of special exhibition programs, handle media relations, and act as a key media spokesperson.
Board Engagement
As a member of the Board Marketing Committee, the CMO collaborates on strategies to foster meaningful engagement with donors, collectors, and community ambassadors.
Team and Organizational Oversight
Leading the Communications, Graphic Design, Marketing, and Visitor Experience departments, the CMO creates an inclusive and productive work environment. They recruit, develop, and inspire a talented team that represents the diverse communities the museums serve.

According to FAMSF CEO Thomas K. Seligman, the ideal CMO "will have demonstrated experience in strategic leadership, operational management...and skilled at developing strong relationships." They will also be an approachable collaborator with a genuine passion for visual art and education.
Qualifications
A minimum of 10 years in institutional and direct consumer marketing is required, preferably in a museum or non-profit organization. Exceptional written and interpersonal skills, strong public relations experience, and data analysis expertise are also essential qualifications.
Compensation and Benefits
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco offers a competitive salary range of $240,000 to $270,000, along with an array of employee benefits, including healthcare, retirement plans, and paid time off.
